Volunteers are the very life blood of Lakeway Area Habitat for Humanity. They fill key roles in our day-to-day work, both on the construction site, fundraising and in other important ways. Habitat is proud to work with our neighbors to build safe, decent, affordable homes, something that could not be done without the service of our many willing volunteers. Reaching out from Christian roots to practice the Theology of the Hammer, Habitat is open to all people, and we welcome volunteers from every faith, denomination, race and economic status to join us in our mission to end substandard housing in the Lakeway Area. We are a non-proselytizing organization and will not work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Lakeway Area Habitat For Humanity.

What’s really exciting and unique about Lakeway Area Habitat’s work, is that we provide opportunities for thousands of people and organizations to get involved. When we work together to help people be successful homeowners, we create successful communities, because homes and families are the foundations of successful communities.

Creating affordable housing is a community effort and Lakeway Area Habitat For Humanity strives to create high-quality volunteer experiences for all members of the community seeking to respond to the need for affordable housing. There is a wide range of opportunities available for groups and individuals. Volunteers can help with new home construction and home restoration, office support, family services, event planning, and many other aspects of Lakeway Area Habitat’s work.

Service In our Store prep area will include light lifting, sorting, hanging and carrying items or clothes out to the sales floor. On the Store Sales floor, you will be interacting with customers and help them with carry items to check out or to their cars if necessary.

BUILD SITE

Nearly every facet of home construction including, framing, painting, roofing, siding, landscaping and more. If you have any particular skills please let our Site Supervisor know at the briefing. Also if you are not comfortable doing any particular task, just let the supervisor know. They will find something for you to do.

An important key to safety when volunteering is what you wear. Here’s a list of appropriate attire for a construction site.

YOUR TOP

Wear a heavy duty shirt, preferably long sleeved. Do not wear a shirt that is too loose or baggy. Keep your shirt tucked in to avoid snagging. Your shirt will protect you from sunburn, so keep it on even when the weather is hot. It also will protect you from scrapes and from skin-irritating materials.

YOUR PANTS

Wear straight pants of proper length without pocket flaps or cuffs. They should not be baggy or so long that your heels get caught in them. Be sure your belt is secured through your pants’ belt loops.

LEAVE JEWELRY HOME

One of the most common causes of amputated fingers is jewelry, such as rings, wrist watches, and bracelets. Jewelry can too easily get caught in machinery, which is very dangerous.

FOOTWEAR

The best type of footwear on a job site are high top safety boots. They give you more support than other boots and more protection than tennis shoes, in case something should drop on your foot. Wear rubber boots when working in wet material. Tennis shoes are allowed on Habitat job site, however, they may get wet and/or dirty.

WINTER WEAR

During cold weather, dress in layers so you can shed an outer layer as the day grows warmer.

SUMMER WEAR

In most parts of the country, it gets very hot during the summer months. While you do want to dress to be comfortable it is advised that you continue to wear long pants and a shirt with sleeves. Tank tops or sandals/flip-flops should never be worn on a construction site!

You will be provided with the proper protection for the type of work you will be doing.

COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE

Thank you for turning to Lakeway Area Habitat for Humanity to fulfill your Court-Ordered Community Service responsibility. We are happy to help you fulfill your committed hours, and look forward to working with you. We want this volunteer experience to be rewarding. In order to accomplish this, there are certain guidelines we maintain so we stay organized and ensure a positive working relationship.

Offenses we do not accept: internet crimes, acts of violence, theft related crimes, sex-related crimes.

You must sign-in and sign-out on your scheduled day to volunteer at Lakeway Area Habitat for Humanity. Lakeway Area Habitat for Humanity is not responsible for hours that are not logged or not signed. We allow community service hours to be completed at our Recycling Hope Store, on our construction site, and with our Home Repair Program.

Please use tools and equipment as instructed and adhere to safety procedures. Closed toe shoes are required on Habitat for Humanity Job Sites. Please remember, a completed volunteer intake form and liability waiver is required before volunteering. Be sure to complete your online safety training course before your first day at the Job site.
